The maps that form the so-called Jansson-Visscher maps of New England span more than a century. When the prototype was first issued by Jansson in 1651, it was the most up to date and detailed of the region available. When it was last issued by Lotter in 1757 (map no. 9), basically unchanged, it was of less practical value as a representation of the then most important part of colonial America. The decorative aspect of Lotter's map reflects the German eighteenth century desire for a map both boldly and fully engraved, and includes a view of New York. Although the last in the series, this map is the first to show by means of printed lines the boundaries of Massachusetts, New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The map is in very fine condition, with original colouring.
